October is upon us again and apart from Autumn this also means a new release of Ubuntu Linux, the Karmic Koala. Karmic is special not only because of it's rich features and new technologies but because it marks the fifth anniversary of the Ubuntu Linux distribution (Warty, or Ubuntu 4.10, was the first release).

In this issue of Linux Identity Starter, you will find two bootable install DVDs containing Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and its derivatives: Kubuntu 9.10, Xubuntu 9.10 and Mythbuntu 9.10 for both architectures: 32 & 64-bits. The cool thing about them is that you get the opportunity to test each distribution in a live environment. Furthermore, you can choose to install Ubuntu inside a Windows operating system – just like any other application, by using Wubi – or directly on your machine, running Linux from its own dedicated partition(s).

Karmic brings about the usual improvements which include the new GNOME version (2.28). It's following suit with the GNOME project itself by replacing Pidgin and Ekiga with the Empathy instant messenger.

So, if you haven't already upgraded, it's time to give the Koala a try.

Linux offers the pleasure of sharing: not only software, but knowledge. Using Linux, and especially Ubuntu, makes you a part of a large global community of people that enjoy using free software to fulfill their computing needs and also their entertainment ones. It's a phenomenon of the 21st century, revolving around the idea of connecting people from different cultural environments through an operating system that lets everybody contribute to it.

Ubuntu's fundamental concept is humanity to others or I am what I am because of who we all are (the translation into English of the word ubuntu from the Zulu language). The core of the Ubuntu philosophy is represented by the following ideals:

  • Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees.
  • Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice.
  • Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software even if they work under a disability.

This issue will take you step by step into Ubuntu's world, showing you in detail what must be done to have a successful install, how you can boot it along with Windows, how to configure software applications and hardware. Also, assuming that you are new to the free and open-source community represented by Linux, you will learn how Ubuntu's directory structure looks like so that you can find files that interest you very quickly and a glimpse of Linux commands to be able to work with the terminal.

Fedora is a innovative and fast moving distribution. Not only does it have new releases every six months, it also gets a large number of updates. Unlike some other distributions which limit themselves to only providing security and major bug fixes, Fedora tends to stay close to upstream releases and provides many new enhancements via updates regularly.

Fedora (Leonidas) 11 is a significant milestone from the Fedora Project with a feature list that dwarfs the previous releases.

This magazine includes two DVD versions of Fedora 11 Leonidas: 32-bit and 64-bit. 32-bit, or x86 as labeled on official version, is recommended for 32-bit AMD, Intel Pentium family, Intel Core Duo and some VIA chipsets. 32-bit can also be used on 64-bit computers. 64-bit version is recommended for 64-bit AMD, Intel (EM64T including Pentium M, Core 2 Duo, and Xeon) and can be only installed on 64-bit computer.

The multiboot DVD attached to this edition contains the 4 distributions, namely:

Fedora, • Mandriva, • openSUSE, • Ubuntu.

You will find in this magazine an introduction to each of this major actors in order to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Keep in mind that your needs may and probably will evolve (testing a distribution within a couple of hours is different than using it for years). Most of what you will learn in one distribution will be usable in another one (GNOME tools, KDE tools, shells commands are distribution-agnostic).

Each distribution tries to provide the best experience “out-of-the-box”, so we offer you the possibility to test the Live edition in order to verify if your specific hardware setup is correctly handled. Using this Live mode allows to check thoroughly the distribution's fitness to your needs without altering the disk partitioning. If you appreciate what you have seen, you just need to click on the Install icon on the desktop to have the distribution on your hard drive.
