Greetings:

I'm using the LiveDVD with 4 Distros - available via your "Best of" Magazine; and my Viewscreen keeps on flickering on 7-9 second intervals.

Is there an bug in x on Mandriva?

Regards

I've been testing Mandriva 2009.0 on my NVIDIA and ATI equipped machines and no problems appeared.

But there are many people reporting similar problem.
I've found a reported bug in Intel driver:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18651

You have to look for a solution related to the hardware you use.

(I hope this is in the correct place):

Hi.

I am also using the 4 Distro Live DVD, and I have been unable to get the Fedora distro to work. (I have no problem booting into Ubuntu or SUSE; I haven't tried Mandriva because I already use that distro on my machine, and I'm looking to switch from that one.)

I even ran the file verification before booting into Fedora. Whether I verify files or not, Fedora looks like everything's a go, then it gets to a certain point then sticks. I actually have to power down the machine to get out of the screen.

The screen where it sticks looks like the actual Fedora desktop has booted up, except that there is nothing that can be clicked, and all activity seems to have stopped in the program. There is a white box that says "localhost.localdomain" and underneath those words, a grey bar that appears to have the word "Automatic", except it's cut off so it just says "Automat". (I'd send a screen shot, but the computer is completely inoperable at this point.) This has happened every single time I have tried to use the Fedora distro.

(I have a Gateway laptop 64-bit, 4G memory, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, if that matters.)

Is there something I can do, or do I have a faulty disc???

Anyone else have a problem with the Fedora?

Thanks in advance for any assistance or comments.

Sure. The hardware you're trying to install Fedora 10 on really matters.

I tried to find a solution on http://fedoraforum.org/

Common solutions advise to change kernel boot options just before installation (or starting live) process.

You should enter Fedora Menu and press TAB key when "Boot Fedora 10 Live" option is highlighted. Then add an option to the kernel configuration string (at its end).

Advised options:
xdriver=vesa - helps when there's a problem with video driver
acpi=off - helps when there's a problem with power management drivers

You can try these options separate or both.

If you will search for any solution the most important is your computer model and graphics card.

I hope this will help.

Hi again.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried all three scenarios (each option by itself and then together) and nothing worked. Then, just for the heck of it, I then put the DVD in my desktop computer---one so OLD I'm embarrassed to report the specs---and the Fedora portion of the disc worked perfectly. So obviously the disc is fine, though I'm confounded as to why it wouldn't work in my (much) newer laptop. (I looked up the hardware requirements and I'm able to satisfy them.)

Anyway, I downloaded the Fedora 11 x86_64 iso directly from the Fedora site and the disc I burned booted just fine in my laptop, but then I got a message about a kernel failure after the Gnome desktop started. I'm going to try again with the Fedora x86_64 KDE version iso (as I actually prefer KDE, since it's what I'm most familiar with) and see what happens. (I really, really want to try Fedora because I heard it is easier to use a GSM/3G USB dongle with Fedora, and the support for one on Mandriva is miserable, to my experience, anyway.)

If I continue to have "kernel failure" I will research the problem and try not to bother you guys Smile I usually try to find info and tutorials myself on the web before I bother a forum with questions...I'm still sort of a Linux newbie (I'm kind of an advanced newbie, lol) but I'm not too lazy to try to find the answer myself when I can... Smile

Thank you again for your help!
